Ashiru vs Bello: Court Adjourns Case of Alleged Certificate Forgery Till January 24, 2023




The High Court sitting in Kaduna  has for the second time adjourned till January 24, 2022 to hear the  case filed by the Gubernatorial Candidate of Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] in Kaduna State in 2019, Right Honourable Isa Mohammed Ashiru, on allegation of forgery of academic credentials made against him by a chieftain of All Progressives Congress [APC] in the State, Professor Mohammed Sani Bello.


Prof. Sani Bello had earlier claimed in widely circulated media Interview that  "Isah Ashiru does not possess the required, or the competency to become the Governor of Kaduna State" because he did not posses the requisite leaving school certificate .

However, the PDP governorship candidate in the suit No: KDH/KAD/639/2021,the Plaintiff ,Hon. Isa Ashiru also  sought," AN ORDER directing the Defendant to retract his defamatory, statement of and concerning the Plaintiff by publishing a retraction  on social media, print and electronic media, which enjoys wide circulation reach within Nigeria.

 The Court ORDER also  directed Professor Mohammed Sani Bello to pay the Plaintiff ,Hon Isa Ashiru  the sum of (One Hundred Million Naira Only) for defamation of his character.

Isa Ashiru in the ORDER sought a  perpetual injunction restraining the Defendant from publishing any defamatory statement of and concerning the Plain.The cost of this suit.

The case was adjourned till December 15, 2021 but the court that day as trial Judge  Edward Ando was said to be visiting Prisons and so, the case was adjourned till January 24 2022.

Speaking to Journalists shortly after the adjournment, Dr. Abdulrahman  Usman, a Political  ally of Ashiru said that his friend felt maligned and defamed .

He further claimed that as a result of these allegations, Ashiru's reputation has been damaged and therefore, the PDP flag bearer for the 2019 election is out correct that wrong impression pushed out by Prof. Bello.

Usman also told Journalists that Ashiru has a valid certificate and he is ready to prove it before the court to protect his integrity.

Meanwhile, Garba Sadau, the counsel to Sani Bello told Journalists in an interview that, "We are prepared to defend the case because we have the prerequisite documents to defend the case".
