Northern elders condemn burning of Sarkin Fulani's Oyo home

...say act provocative, senseless

...seek arrest, prosecution of perpetrators

...appeal to Hausa/Fulani youths to remain calm

...sue for national unity, tolerance

Some Northern elders have condemned in strong terms the burning of the home, livestock and cars of the Sarkin Fulani of Oyo State, Alhaji Saliu Abdulkadir, by some youths in allegedly instigated by an ethnic bigot,Sunday Adeyemo otherwise known as Sunday Igboho.

While describing the action of the youths as provocative and senseless, the elders charged both the state government and security agencies to ensure that perpetrators of the heinous act were arrested and prosecuted.

The elders, who operate under the Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development (CNEPD), said the need for all those responsible for the arson to be brought to justice had become urgent, to serve as deterrence against future occurrences.

The coalition, which made its position known in a statement by its National Coordinator, Engr. Zana Goni, cautioned youths across the country against engaging in acts of violence.

Specifically, the coalition noted that at all times, legal and constitutional bodies such as the judiciary and police should be allowed to settle grievances of whatever nature, rather than resorting to self-help, which they frowned at.

This was as the elders reminded Nigerians that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) guaranteed every citizen the right live and conduct legitimate business in any part of the country.

While advocating for peaceful co-existence, national cohesion, religious and ethnic tolerance, the elders called on authorities to always rise to the occasion, whenever issues that threatened national security and stability reared their heads.

In the same token, the elders have enjoined Northern youths to remain calm and law-abiding, saying reprisals will only exacerbate the situation.

"We condemn in totally the senseless, provocative and disturbing act of arson targeted at the home of the Sarkin Fulani of Oyo State, Alh. Saliu Abdulkadir, by youths suspected to be Yoruba.

"As elders, we are alarmed that the home of the Sarkin, his livestock and 11 cars would be burnt in that manner at a time the country needs urgent healing and reconciliation.

"We maintain that violence remains inimical to the progress of any society and her people, as it retards socio-economic development on all fronts", the elders said in the statement.

They tasked security operatives to go after perpetrators of the wicked act, even as they insisted that security around the Hausa/Fulani community in the state must be heightened, to avoid further needless attacks.

They have, however, identified some persons suspected to have masterminded the violent attacks, urging the police to track and arrest them immediately.

"We charge the police and other law enforcement operatives to ensure adequate security protection for the Hausa/Fulani community in the state, who may be prone to further attacks.

"Particularly, we call for the immediate arrest of one Chief Sunday Adeyemo Igboho and all the perpetrators of this evil act and bring them before the law.

"Furthermore, we wish to make a passionate appeal to all the Fulani and Hausa  youths in the north to once again disappoint this enemies of national unity by remaining peaceful and wait for government to act in a manner that will bring justice to those affected", the statement said.

Meanwhile, the elders  have alleged that the act was "fueled, and sponsored by an online news medium owned by a failed presidential candidate from the Southwest in the 2019 general election".

They accused the unnamed politician of "doing everything possible to undermine national unity and security", saying "and we must resist them and all their supporters".

"We also call on Nigerians to ignore media propaganda by this medium, which is aimed at causing disunity among Nigerians.

"Finally, we wish to commend the Governor of Oyo state on his stands on the incident; particularly the order to arrest Mr Sunday Igboho. We also urge the Oyo State government  to activate measures to compensate all those affected by this mindless act, to assuage their pain", the elders said.

Concerned Elders to Buhari: Sack Garba Shehu now

...say presidential spokesperson's interview on Service Chiefs shameful, insensitive, unprofessional

...accuse Garba Shehu  of deriving personal benefits from the service Chiefs

...insist military heads not personal aides of Mr. President

...we hold no grudges against military high command, they say

Some concerned elders across the country, have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sack his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, over his claim that the tenure of Service Chiefs was at the "pleasure" of the Commander-in-Chief.

The patriotic elders' demand for the sack of Shehu followed the latter's recent interview on Television continental TVC which focused primarily on the state of insecurity in the country.

Responding to a question on why President Buhari was still keeping the Service Chiefs, in the face of worsening insecurity, Shehu had claimed that no part of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) stipulated tenure of military high command.

This was as he further explained that the President, who is the appointing authority, has not acted otherwise, because he had classified and privileged information that critics and those calling for their sack are not privy to.

In the referenced interview, Shehu had said, inter alia, that: "President Muhammadu Buhari is still keeping the Service Chiefs because he is seeing things Nigerians don't see.

"He's seeing things that critics are not seeing. It's not a tenured appointment.

"There is no part of the law that says Chief of Army Staff and others must serve for two years. Then after two years, he must go. He served at the pleasure of the President".

However, the elders, who operate under the aegis of Conference of Concerned Nigerian Elders (COCNE), took strong exception to the presidential spokesperson's submission, describing same as unprofessional in scope, insensitive in content, shameful in form, and reckless in nature.

They maintained that as a senior journalist that he is, Shehu ought to, at all material times, weigh his utterances against the general mood of the nation, particularly when discussions centre on the vexed issue of security and public safety.

It was against that backdrop, therefore, that the elders alleged that Shehu may be deriving some personal benefits from the continuous retention of the security chiefs, hence his position, as espoused during the Jos interview.

The elders in a statement by Prof. Tunde Banjo for South West, Dr Achike Nwachukwu for South East, Barr. Jackson Spiff for South South, Alhaji Baba Usman Funtua, North West, Prof. Shehu Bulama for North East and Dr. Isaiah Terhila for North Central zones, respectively, warned the presidential aide against incurring the wrath of citizens who, they said, hardly sleep with both eyes closed, owing to the disturbing state of insecurity in the country.

"We are alarmed by a rather reckless, insensitive, shameful and unprofessional statement credited to Garba Shehu, President Muhammadu Buhari's media adviser, to the effect that the Service Chiefs, who have remained in office despite glaring lacklustral record of performance, serve at the 'pleasure' of the Commander-in-Chief.

"We are, indeed, shocked that a senior journalist of Shehu's standing, who ought to be circumspect in his outings, especially when issues of security and public safety are concerned, would choose to speak in the manner he did.

"We daresay that only those that derive personal benefits from the status quo, will support its retention, as Shehu has continued to shamefully do.

"Shehu and his ilk must be educated on the fact that, though appointed by the President, the Service Chiefs owe their respective positions to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which is embodied by the citizens - the task payers' - from whom they draw their humongous salaries, allowance and other perquisites", the statement said.

Arising from the adorestated position, the concerned elders have called on the immediate sack of Shehu, to serve as deterrence to other presidential appointees, who may want to travel on Shehu's route.

Meanwhile, the elders hastened to clarify that they hold no grudges against the military heads, whom they maintained, have done their best, especially during the early stage of their appointments.

They said their position remained altruistic, and in the interest of career growth in the military;  not borne out of malice, mischief,or any other sinister motive.

The statement concluded: "As concerned elders, we observed that this is not the first time Shehu will be supporting the retention of Service Chiefs, against glaring failure to secure lives and property.

"From a patriotic position, therefore, we are calling on our dear and amiable President to show Shehu the way out without further delay. This will endear his government to Nigeria’s.

"For purposes of encouraging career progression in the military and other critical establishments, we reiterate our call for the removal of the Service Chiefs, and consequential replacement with senior officers with new ideas and perspectives on how to check the hydra-headed monster of insecurity".

Plateau: Peace advocacy group hails Lalong, OPSH, others on restoration of peace

*Hails OPSH for been decisive and not responding to unprovoked shooting of personnel during workers' protest

*Urges state govt, security agencies, stakeholders to sustain peace efforts

A peace advocacy group has thanked the Plateau State governor, Barr. Simon Lalong and the Commander of Operation Safe Haven and other security agencies for restoring peace in the state.

It urged the government, the special military outfit as well as other security agencies involved in the state's peace efforts to sustain the tempo with a view to enthroning permanent peace in the state.

The group under the aegis of Conference of Plateau State Peace Builders' Network, in a statement, Thursday, particularly hailed Operation Safe Haven for exhibiting professionalism, saying the disposition of men of the internal military outfit to last week's unprovoked attack on its men deployed to calm frayed nerves during last week protest embarked upon by local government workers in Plateau State was indeed commendable.

Regretting that the men who were constitutionally deployed to quell the tension arising from the state council workers protesting non implementation of minimum wage at the local level were rather shot at , resulting in the wounding of a Lance Corporal, the group in a statement by its national coordinator,Dr Dung Bot and national secretary, Barr. Mrs Lucy Wuyep, respectively, expressed happiness that soldiers were decisive in dispersing the protesters and did not respond with force when provoked.

"Ordinarily, there would have been serious casualty figure because of the unruly behavior of some of the local government workers who were protesting over non implementation of minimum wage, leading to the shooting of a soldier in the rank of Lance Corporal," the statement said.

The group explained that:"This statement is aimed at commending the efforts of the Plateau State Government, particularly Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) on the peace we are enjoying on the Plateaus."

"We wish to generally commend the Plateau State Government for putting in place the right framework that is responsible for the current peace we are enjoying on the Plateau.

"We applaud Operation Safe Haven for living up to the citizens' expectations in combating terrorism, banditry, cattle rustling, farmers/ herdsmen conflict, kidnapping, cultism and other social vices up to this moment," it said.

According to the Conference of Plateau State Peace Builders' Network,"The uncommon peace and tranquility we are experiencing today in Bassa , Barkin Ladi Riyom and other local government areas of Plateau State which used to be hub of crisis has made the state safe today to all genuine businesses and activities."

"We must thank the  governor of Plateau State, the Commander of Operation Safe Haven and his men and other security agencies for the current peace we are enjoying today. We urge them to sustain it this year.

"We wish to specially thank all the officers and men of Operation Safe Haven for the aggressive patrol during the yuletide season which made it almost crime free. This is the first of its kind after a long while," it added.

Going further, the peace advocacy organisation said:"We wish to particularly commend all the officers and men of OPSH and other security agencies for the show of professionalism and restraint during the local government protest despite the high level of provocation within the week."

"Ordinarily, there would have been serious casualty figure because of the unruly behavior of some the the local government workers who were protesting over non implementation of minimum wage, leading to the shooting of a soldier in the rank of Lance Corporal," it said.

It claimed that:"We observed with regret that the legitimate protest which started peacefully was later hijacked by hoodlums and politicians alike."

"We thank the security agencies particularly Operation Safe Haven for the massive and timely deployment of personnel to quell the protest. This act no doubt averted what would have been crisis and possibly resulted to a very devastating effect on the current peace on the Plateau," it added.

SOKIPEP decries latest attacks, killing of pastoralists, cows in Southern Kaduna

*Hails OPSH for prompt response, arrest of suspects

*Tells SOKAPU to engage youths on peace advocacy

*Assist Gov el-Rufai's peace enthronement measures

The Southern Kaduna Peace Practitioners' Network,SOKIPEP, has flayed the renewed attacks in Atyap Kataf Chiefdom of Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State which resulted in the death of a 22 year old pastoralist, identified as Ado Hassan Fada and the poisoning of cows in the area.

The peace advocacy group said the isolated attacks, killings and poisoning of cows at a time stakeholders had worked painstakingly to restore peace and harmony in the entire Southern Kaduna area was unfortunate.

In a statement it issued Monday,in reaction to the killing of the 22-year old pastoralist on Sunday, the group while describing the development as senseless, asked the people of the area to give peace a chance.

In the statement signed by its national coordinator, Rev. Dauda Fadia, SOKIPEP  charged the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union, SOKAPU, to begin to engage youths of the area in peace advocacy with a view to enthroning lasting peace.

It equally tasked SOKAPU to begin to think of ways of assisting the state governor, Nasir el-Rufai on his peace advocacy measures so that total peace can be brought back, saying their continuous attacks on the governor and his government's policies and programmes without fashioning out reasonable alternatives
was a wrong approach.

It, however, commended Operation Safe Haven, the special military task force responsible for restoration of peace in the area for prompt response to the situation, evacuation of the victim as well as arrest of suspected culprits.

While charging the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the criminal activities in the area, the peace advocacy group commended the families of the victims for not taking laws into their hands.

It charged them to remain calm, resolute and have faith in the ability of security agencies to deliver to their constitutional mandate of seeking justice for people unjustly treated just as it expressed optimism that those responsible would not go free.

SOKIPEP  also thanked the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, for its prompt intervention in the matter, saying the organisation's appeal to members to remain calm and allow security agencies do their work diligently, averted reprisals which action it noted, would have been disastrous.

It said the professionalism exhibited by men of the OPSH saved the day as according to it,any contrary action would have had catastrophic effect on the lives of the people of the area.

"As a peace advocacy group in Southern Kaduna, we wish to condemn in the strongest possible terms, the inhuman and barbaric killings of a pastoralist on Sunday in Atyap Kataf Chiefdom of Zango Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

" The killing of the pastoralist, a 22 year old identified as Ado Hassan Fada and the poisoning of cows in the area at a time the people were beginning the reap the painstaking efforts of stakeholders who worked enthronement of peace in the area was unfortunate.

"We are surprised that some people are still bent on ensuring that the people return to taking up arms against one another! These merchants of crises would not allow peace reign in our dear area. This is condemnable.

"We wish to say that these retrogressive and anti- peace acts are highly condemnable and must not be allowed to thrive

" We call on the security agencies to fish out these criminals and make them face the full wrath of the law of our land,"they said.

The group further said:"We believe strongly that the  misguided  youths who carried out this wicked act of renewed attacks, killing of the pastoralist and the poisoning of cows were sponsored by some blood-tasty fifth columnists who were benefiting from the age- long crises that have now been resolved due to the concerted efforts of the federal government, Governor Nasir el-Rufai, Operation Safe Haven and other critical stakeholders.

"We believe this progress made in the peace efforts in the area has put these supposed sponsors out of business since their business thrive only during crisis and war times hence their desperate efforts to revive it."

"We advise that, the entire good people of Southern Kaduna must come together to reject these evil and crisis merchants once and for all."

It added that:"We wish to call on our umbrella union, the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union, SOKAPU,to begin to engage our youths in peace advocacy with a view to enthroning lasting peace in our land. "

"As peace practitioners, we must speak the truth because only truth, justice,  and equality can guarantee peace and stability, this we must do no matter who is involved or hurt."

"Our elders and cultural organizations must carry out community advocacy and enlightenment targeted at  our youths in Southern Kaduna, so that they can  stop taking laws into their hands thereby endangering the lives of other innocent and peace loving people of Southern Kaduna,"it charged.

It reiterated:"We wish to also call on SOKAPU to support the peace efforts of our state government led by Governor Nasir el-Rufai so that meaningful progress can be made."
