By Mike Odeh James

The Chairman Northern Speakers Forum, Speaker Kaduna state House of Assembly RT Hon Yusuf Ibrahim Zailani Garkuwan Musabakar Qurani, has felicitated with kaduna women as they celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day.

Zailani, in a statement in Kaduna on Monday he personally signed and made available to the press, described the theme of this year’s celebration, “Choose to Challenge”, as apt in reminding the society of the pivotal roles women play in the family and the nation

“Our women deserve support and encouragement to participate without discrimination or inhibitions in governance and public affairs in general.

“Women also play indispensable roles in private and public lives and deserve full support and respect of society for those roles.

Our public policies should, therefore, deliberately seek to get the best from them for the peace and progress of our country,” Kaduna Speaker said.

Zailani Futher said "Kaduna State Government, mainstreaming gender into health, education, water and agriculture sector strategies, driving and shaping the state’s ability to meet the needs of women"

The Chairman Northern Speakers Forum said the Northern Assembly would always promote and defend the rights and interests of the Northern women and fight anything that stood against their wellbeing and aspirations.

The commemoration began in 1978 as "Women's History Week" in Sonoma County, California, and was championed by Gerda Lerner and the National Women's History Alliance to be recognized as a national week (1980) and then month (1987) in the United States, spreading internationally after that
