President Muhammadu Buhari and other chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC have urged to, in the spirit of one Nigeria, gentleman agreement consider the current Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo as the Presidential candidate of the APC in 2023.
Mal Mustapha Saye, the national coordinator of Northern Frontier Movement gave this advice yesterday while speaking to selected journalists in Kaduna on Wednesday 4, December 2022.
Mal Saye said his advice to the President became necessary following the moves by certain persons and groups to impose on the APC an unpopular candidate which may spell doom for the APC.
"It is imperative that i remind the President that , he won the 2015 election based on that fact his region, the North was shortchanged by the then President ,Goodluck Jonathan.
" Instead of Jonathan to complete Yar' Adua's tenure then allow a Northerner, he was ready to do an additional for 4 years .What happened thereafter was that Nigerians from the South, Middle Belt and North United to vote massively for Major General Buhari .
He continued,
" It is with this in mind that I plead with the President to consider the ethnic cum religious differences and go for someone who can unite APC and bring victory to the party come 2023 .
Mal Saye further added that Northerners would not hesitate in voting Osinbajo because they have been doing so .
" If you recall, in 2003, Northerners voted President Olusegun Obasanjo despite the fact that he is a Christian and Southerner. In 1993, Northerners voted Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, MKO even defeated the late Tofa in his home state of Kano , he said
Speaking in the same vein, Okpani Mike Odeh Akatu , the national secretary of Arewa Frontier Movement, the North is very cosmopolitan and very conscious of the country's geopolitical cum religious divide .He also said that the North has always acted in favour of other regions so as to balance ensure national cohesion.
" In the North, we have Hausas, Yorubas, Idomas, Nupes and we have both the Christians and Muslims.We are aware of that, hence we try to do the balancing act .
" Our choice of Osinbajo as the President candidate of APC is very delibrate.It will kill the cries of marginalisation of the South and Christians alike .
He continued ,
" That apart, Osinbajo as the Vice President is now a seasoned politician and administrator .He is more than capable of solving the the issues facing the country.
Okpani Akatu warned against fielding a Muslim - Muslim in the APC as it would not augure well for the party .He also cautioned against fielding older persons as Presidential c candidate of the party adding that majority of the electorates are very young persons and would react negatively if you impose an older person on the party .
