Chairman House Committee on Health Care Services Hon. Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu has commended the Registrar General, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria,Dr Farouk Umar Abubakar and his team for taking the council to a greater height.
The Law maker commended the management of the council for being transparent, judicious, prudent and for implementing the budgetary proposals sent to the National Assembly previous.
"This morning we were here at the Nursing Council to perform one of our constitutional duties which is to oversight the Nursing Council.We were here last year.
We are here now to assess what was done from January this to date so that we can assess the performances while preparing for the 2022 budget appropriation for the council
"From our assessment, I think we have seen transparency, where money was remitted to the Federal Government with evidences and receipts to back it up.
"We have also seen implementation of projects as proposed by the council as outlined in the budget appropriation for 2021
Dr. Sununu, however expressed dismay at the report presented to him by the Council.
According to the lawmaker, in eighteen months over 17000 nurses left the country to work in foreign countries. This he said means that in every month, Nigeria looses about 1000 nurses. He attributed the ugly situation to the inability of the government and other critical stakeholders in the sector to provide conducive and enabling environment for nurses to practice their profession.
The law maker then pledged to assist the council in any possible areas to make sure the problem of nurses leaving the country is resolved .
Earlier on, Members of House Commitee on Health Care Services were briefed by Dr. Farouk Umar Abubakar and Financial records of the Council were scrutinized by the members.
After the assessment, the House Commitee Chair commended the Council for keeping a clean record as well as implementing to the letter projects that were earlier appropriated for.
